Player was honoured by Trump a day after the US Capitol building was stormed by insurrectionists in Washington, causing controversy within in the South African golfing fraternity.

Player’s son, Marc, particularly didn’t like the golfing great’s participation in the ceremony at the time. He tweeted: ‘I wish my father would simply & politely decline this “award” at this time. Tone deaf. In denial. Wrong!!’
