World No 1 Rory McIlroy is ‘very hopeful’ that the PGA Tour’s new season schedule will run smoothly when it gets under way at the Charles Schwab Challenge on 11 June.
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic brought a premature end to many golfing events around the world with some being postponed to later dates, while others have been completely cancelled.

The PGA Tour has since drafted a whole revised schedule in order to complete as many events as possible before the end of the year, most notably the Masters, which has been moved to November.
‘Everyone that is working on it is very confident that we are going to get back out on the golf course with a lot of precautions and taking all the necessary measures to make sure that we keep everyone safe and healthy,’ McIlroy said in an interview with Sky Sports.
The first number of events on the PGA Tour is expected to be held behind closed doors in order to curtail further spread of Covid-19, but according to McIlroy it will be good for the fans to watch golf on their TVs once again.
‘The whole world is starved of sport on TV and we are going to come back with these first four events without any spectators, but just for people to have a bit of escapism and watch something on TV that isn’t the news and about the coronavirus will be nice for some people.’
