Cam Young made unwanted history when he finished second at the Valspar Championship on Sunday.
After shooting 69-69-68-68 for a total of 10-under-par 274, the 26-year-old achieved his seventh second-place PGA Tour finish – the most without a victory in the past 40 years.
On Sunday, Young surged into contention with birdies on holes 11, 12, and 14, positioning himself well as he approached the 18th tee. However, a wayward tee-shot effectively took any chance of a comeback victory away as he settled for bogey and finished two shots behind champion Peter Malnati.
The PGA Tour’s 2022 Rookie of the Year, Young’s resume boasts some harsh narrow misses.
He finished runner up at the 150th Open by one shot to Australian Cameron Smith. He also finished second by two shots that year at the Genesis Invitational and the Wells Fargo Championship.
Young’s other runner-ups include the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship, 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic and the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
When asked about the disappointment of another second-place finish, Young gave a candid response: “Honestly, I realised I wasn’t going to win pretty quickly, and I have a four-hour drive home with a one- and a two-year-old, so whatever emotions are attached to that.”
