The third round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship on Thursday was cancelled due to an unplayable hole.
According to coaches who spoke to the Golf Channel, the hole at the 308-yard, par-four 6th at Mission Inn and Resort’s El Campeon Course in Florida had been cut on a 5% slope on the right side of the green.
The decision to cancel the round and revert to 36-hole scores was made with almost 60% of the 151-player field having finished with play.
“They should’ve known not to put the hole there,” said one coach. “They just said they were sorry and they felt bad.”
The hole was statistically the toughest of the third round, playing more than a shot-and-a-half over par with 29 others (triple-bogeys or worse). However, there were five birdies.
“I saw two of the birdies,” added the same coach. “One would’ve gone 25 yards off the green if it didn’t go in.”
Round 3 of the NCAA D3 Women’s Golf Championship was canceled (with nearly 60% of the field finished) because of this hole location, which the NCAA deemed “unplayable.”
