Justin Walters fired the one of the lowest rounds of the day to lead the South African charge at the BMW International in Germany on Friday.
Six South Africans weren’t sent home at the halfway mark including Ernie Els, who went from highest-ranked Saffa to having the weekend off after an 80 in round two.
Walters had just one bogey today and was matched by Scott Hend, who moved to the top of the leaderboard, as the only two players to shoot 67. Martin Kaymer was one of four players with a 68, along with Thorbjorn Olesen, but sits two shots back of the Australian leader.
Walters’ back nine was bogey-free and included two birdies to go with his eagle 3 at the 15th.
Next best from a South African perspective was Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who at even par through 36, is in a share of 24th place. Bezuidenhout made three birdies, two of which on a bogey-free inward nine, to get back to level.
Haydn Porteous and Richard Sterne joined the duo in progressing to the weekend but have some work to do after a 73 and 74 respectively in round two. The pair sit +2 through 36 holes with Porteous ruing a run of four straight bogeys around the turn.
