Daniel van Tonder is hoping to finish the Sunshine Tour’s Rise-Up Series on a high when the final event of the five-tournament series tees off at the Vodacom Championship Reloaded on Wednesday.

The best local golfers will head to Huddle Park in Johannesburg for the last 54-hole event in what has been a welcome return to professional golf since the long lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Van Tonder has been the star performer throughout the four previous events, claiming victories at the African Bank Sunshine Tour Championship at Glendower and the recent Vodacom Championship Unlocked at ERPM Golf Club.

The 29-year-old is, however, eager to conclude the series strongly and deliver another top performance when play gets under way on Wednesday.

‘I’ve always been happy to do my own thing,’ says Van Rooyen, whose swing has long been a talking point among his fellow professionals. Not only is it powerful, but Van Rooyen also elicits a uniqiue grunt when he strikes the ball. And then during lockdown he discovered intermittent fasting, which he says has been another major factor in his success on the fairways.

Jaco Ahlers believes it’s Van Rooyen’s ownership of his approach to the game that makes him the successful golfer he is.

‘His swing is his own, but he repeats it so well and that’s what you need. I think just overall he’s in a good space and is very comfortable with himself and his game at the moment,’ added Ahlers.
