Journeyman Tyrone van Aswegen is targeting another good performance this week at Colonial Country Club. The South African-born golfer has enjoyed a much better season than last year.
The two-time Sunshine Tour winner went through Web.com Tour qualifying school for the last three years in a row after failing to secure his card in 2014 or 2015. His schedule is jam-packed with events in order to give himself the best chance of achieving that goal this year. Last season he made just eight cuts in 20 tournaments and made just over $168,000.
This year has seen a vast improvement and in 21 tournaments he has made a little over $628,000. He has been able to enter more tournaments and has made 15 cuts.
His breakthrough result came at the Frys.com Open, his first of the season, where tied for third and pocketed $312,000. Van Aswegen thus earned more money in one outing than he had the whole of the previous season.
In addition to this he has two top-20 performances, which came at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Northern Trust Open. This form had seen him, for the first time in is career, dip into the top 300 ranked golfers in the world, although he is on the fringe.
He is currently ranked 100th in the FedEx Cup standings and knows he has to do everything his power to stay in the top 125, starting with a strong performance at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational this week.
