Tyrone van Aswegen heads into the Deutsche Bank Championship needing a top-10 result in order to continue his move in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The top 100 will tee up this week at TPC Boston, but only 70 will progress at the end of the $8,5-million tournament, which is the second of four cutoff events that close out the PGA Tour calendar.
Van Aswegen has done well in his second season on the PGA Tour, with two top-fives and 23 cuts made in 30 starts.
He heads to the Deutsche Bank Championship ranked 93rd in the FedEx Cup standings, but needs to rise 23 places to remain in the Playoffs.
That will take a big result in Boston this week, where the 10 best players in the world are on duty.
Van Aswegen went 11 under par at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago to share fifth place, thereby securing his spot in the Playoffs. Last week at Bethpage Black he shot a Sunday 69 to share 41st place at The Barclays.
Any further progression would be a bonus for the South African, who had to regain his PGA Tour card at the end of last season.
This time around there is no pressure – he’s got playing rights for 2017 – but the appeal of making it through to the top 70 in the FedEx Cup is a big incentive to play well.
He’s an outside hope to go through, but it would make for a great end to his season.
