Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III is focusing on unifying his Ryder Cup team in the wake of the crushing defeat handed to Tom Watson’s crew at Gleneagles two years ago. Vice-Captain Tiger Woods had a few helpful suggestions about how to bond.
‘Tiger and some of the guys were talking about, maybe we need to go somewhere away from golf and go fishing and hang out and just have some fun and talk about it. Team building. Like any good company or any good team does. Take a group of guys and maybe take a group of caddies, go do the same thing,’ said Love.
The American Team will be hard-pressed to perform at Hazeltine this year and Love announced on Wednesday at the At&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that the first meeting is scheduled for next month.
‘Tom (Watson), I think when he was captain, had a dinner at Akron,’ he said. ‘That’s too late for us now. We want to get ahead of the game. We’re going to do our first one in March.’
The Ryder Cup has always been about playing for your team mates, so building spirit is a good move by America’s Captain.
‘We just want it to be fun and friendly and relaxed when we get there. So if we get all the business out of the way, the preparation, the guys know how to prepare for golf tournaments. We just want them to have the opportunity to prepare and then go have fun,’ he concluded.
