Team USA Presidents Cup captain, Steve Stricker, believes Tiger Woods needs to get his body right if he wants to compete on the PGA Tour regularly.
Stricker was speaking to the press on Tuesday at the Valspar Championship, where he confirmed that the pair have been in communication, according to the Golf Channel.
Woods, who is one of Stricker’s vice captains for the Presidents Cup, is yet to confirm his place in either the Arnold Palmer Invitational or the first major of the year, The Masters, at the beginning of next month.
The Golf Channel also revealed that Stricker has received updates from several sources regarding Woods’ recovery. The news is not good, with the 14-time major winner laid low by back spasms which prevented him from finishing the Dubai Desert Classic.
‘He’s working hard at it, but I don’t think he’s doing that well right now physically,’ said Stricker.
‘Just the way he was walking didn’t quite look right. He was walking really gingerly,’ Stricker said in reference to Woods’ opening round of 77 in Dubai.
‘It didn’t really look physically like he was ready to play.
‘Obviously he has to get his body right first before he can compete. Then it’s going to take some time I think for him to come back believing in his swing and trusting in his ability again.’
