Henrik Stenson added a Friday 67 to his bid for the PGA Championship and made the weekend on six-under-par, which was the morning lead in New Jersey.
Heavy rain forced a brief suspension in play just after round two began, which softened Baltusrol Golf Club. Stenson took advantage, as did Patrick Reed, who shot 65 to rise into a share of fourth place.
Louis Oosthuizen worked his way around in level-par 70, but finished 36 holes at two-under-par for the tournament. The 2010 Open Champ will start in a share of 22nd place on Saturday, tied with fellow South African Branden Grace.
America’s Robert Streb shot 63 to equal the low round in a major and joined a share of the lead alongside his countryman Jimmy Walker on nine-under-par.
World number one Jason Day was tied for third with Emiliano Grillo on seven-under, while Henrik Stenson was sole fifth and one shot further back.
