It has been a long wait but Adam Scott has officially announced his return on the PGA Tour after winning the Genesis Invitational on Sunday evening, writes ANDRE HUISAMEN.
Four years since his last win on the Tour, Scott kept his nerve to see off the likes of Matt Kuchar and Rory McIlroy, to claim a two-stroke win at the Riviera Golf Course.
The Australian started the final round alongside Kuchar and McIlroy on 1o under par and in a three-way tie of the lead.
And while the other two faded away on Sunday’s round, the 39-year-old Scott managed great composure to conclude with a 70 to finish the competition on 11 under par.
He finished two shots ahead of Kuchar, Sung Kang and Scott Brown in what in the end proved a very difficult scoring round.
The new World No 1 McIlroy dropped down to T5 in his fourth round to finish the competition on eight under par after big expectations were set for him leading up to Thursday’s start and especially after taking a share of the lead on Saturday.
Scott’s round, though, wasn’t plain sailing at all and he had to make a number of recoveries to prevent himself from also dropping down the leaderboard.
A bogey and a double-bogey on the front nine tipped the scale somewhat, but he immediately responded with a birdie on the 6th.
Another birdie on the 13th sent him on his way but he dropped a shot once again on the 15th hole but recovered with a birdie on the 17th.
That final birdie proved to be the difference as he hung on with a par on the final hole.
Another Aussie wins on TOUR.
