South African Charl Schwartzel was pleased with his performance at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort, despite being unable to defend his title.
The Snake Pit – the last three holes on the course – is one of the tour’s most challenging closing stretches, but Schwartzel made light work of it with a par and two birdies; one of which came at the par three 17th.
‘I hit 7-iron, and it looked good for a long way, but I didn’t think it was going to be particularly good,’ he said after his ball rolled to within a foot of the cup. WATCH IT HERE!
‘I played really well this week. This week, I think compared to last week was easier. I was two shots better and I’m finishing two shots better this year than last year, and finishing sixth,’ said Schwartzel.
Schwartzel has not played a tremendous amount of golf in recent weeks after an injury-induced layoff, but is feeling good ahead of April’s Masters.
‘It’s nice to be fresh and especially at this stage of our schedule. I’ve got the Masters and the Match Play, also coming up. I think I’ve got a bit of advantage over the guys who have played a lot this year, and especially starting to show some good results.’
