The West Course at Wentworth has undergone further renovations with the greens re-done, bunkers removed and others shallowed out in an effort to help improve scoring around the iconic course.
Branden Grace proved that to be true when he raced to -6 and a share of the lead before two late bogeys saw him finish two off the pace. At 69 and -3 were Dean Burmester and Richard Sterne, who will be looking for more of the same on Friday.
Ernie Els, who despite cancelling out an eagle on 12 with a self-imposed penalty, is the only other South African under par after the first round. Jaco Van Zyl finished -1 on Thursday but is +1 early into his second round, while Thomas Aiken and George Coetzee are the only other players from South Africa on or under the current cut line of +1 (at 09:30).
