Four South Africans, including 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman, are among the 25 players within four shots of overnight leader Jens Dantorp at the Scottish Open, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
The unheralded Swede is one shot clear of six players after a third round 68 at Gullane Golf Club. Among those in close behind Dantorp are Rickie Fowler, the 2015 winner, and last week’s Irish Open playoff loser Ryan Fox.
The man who defeated Fox last week, Russell Knox, leads an all British trio two behind. Joining Knox at -11 are Englishmen Aaron Rai and Tyrrell Hatton.
Immelman’s strong showing in Scotland continued on Sunday as he fired a 68 despite three bogeys on his inward nine. Birdies at 13 and 16 after going out in 32 helped the 38-year-old to a 54-hole tally of -10 as he sits in a pile of seven players in hot pursuit of the leader.
Dean Burmester’s 65 and Brandon Stone’s bogey-free 66 helped them join their countryman in a share of 11th with Justin Rose and Thomas Pieters among the high-profile names at -10 and ready to launch a final round bid for the riches on offer.
One shot further back is Darren Fichardt, who stormed into the mix with a 65. The experienced South African made seven birdies with a double on the seventh preventing him from leaping higher on the packed leaderboard.
The only Saffa to lose position on Saturday was Dylan Frittelli, who dropped four shots between the seventh and 12th holes to fall back to a share of 41st place after starting the day sharing 10th.
