Justin Rose has played in the PGA Championship 13 times since his debut at Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2002, where he tied for 23rd place. His record shows six top-25 finishes, including two top-fives.
Next week he will head to Baltusrol Golf Club looking to add the Wanamaker Trophy to his collection.
The Englishman’s first real crack at the title came at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2008, where he shot a second-round 67 to move within one stroke of the leaders. He battled at the weekend with rounds of 74 and 71 before eventually sharing ninth place.
The 35-year-old contended for the season’s final major in 2012 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, where he opened with a round of 69 and finished on Sunday with a six-under-par 66. The problem for Rose was that his second round was a shocking seven-over-par 79, and with Rory McIlroy winning by eight shots, one can only wonder what would have happened if Rose had shot a decent round on that fateful Friday.
Last year the seven-time PGA Tour winner tied for fourth place at Whistling Straits. He played well, but settled for a top-five after Jason Day set a low scoring record of 20-under-par in a major.
Rose has eight top-20 results this year, including a top-10 at the Masters and a third-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship. He won on the PGA Tour in 2015 and came second at the Tour Championship before winning the UBS Hong Kong Open to complete a hot season.
He’s on the right side of the charts when it comes to driving and approach play on the PGA Tour and ranks 13th in scoring average. He is 114th in putting average this season and 178th in putts per round, which needs to improve if he wants to contend at Baltrusol.
