A chorus of golfers from around the world have joined thousands of other well-wishers in sending heartfelt tributes to the family of Jarrod Lyle after news broke that the Australian passed away after a long battle with cancer.
The 36-year-old had been fighting cancer for a third time following a recurrence of acute myeloid leukemia last year, and after his condition deteriorated in hospital recently – affecting his eyesight and speech – Lyle decided to stop receiving cancer treatment and began palliative care.
Lyle was first diagnosed with leukemia as a teenager in 1999 and after beating it relapsed in 2012. The Australian fought back courageously to return to play professional golf, and in 2016 he made the first hole-in-one of the European Tour season at the Australian PGA Championship – acing the par three fifth at RACV Royal Pines Resort.
Throughout his golfing career Lyle was known for his prowess from the tee on par threes. In 2011 he made a hole-in-one at the iconic 16th at TPC Scottsdale in the Waste Management Phoenix Open – a hole famously aced by Tiger Woods in 1997.
Four years later Lyle hit the headlines for making two aces in a charity match in Melbourne, Australia – an event which raised funds for children’s cancer causes.
Jarrod will be sorely missed by the golfing community.
