Jon Rahm grabbed his first point of the week and kept Tiger Woods winless in the process after a 2&1 win on Sunday at the Ryder Cup.
Rahm, who had tasted defeat twice before his outing against the former world number one, was in control from the get-go and never looked back despite Woods showing glimpses of his best.
The Spaniard kept his emotions in check with wins at the 1st and 7th helping him settle into the contest before the veteran American pulled one back on the 9th.
Woods was visibly slower all day and dressed in his wet weather gear, presumably to keep his body warm, finally got into the spirit of the contest and released two vintage fist pumps.
Rahm was forced to bounce back from two three-putts in his inward nine before a birdie on 17th – with Woods once again finding the rough off the tee – enough to seal the contest.
The loss capped a wretched week for Woods, winner of the Tour Championship a week ago, who went winless from four matches; just the fourth player since 1979 to not gain a single point from four or more matches. That unwanted bit of history adds to another as he lost his 21st match in the competition; no player has lost more*.
Rahm, meanwhile, adds his name to that of Constantino Rocca (1997) as the only players to beat Woods on Sunday in the Ryder Cup.
*Phil Mickelson is expected to lose to Francesco Molinari and will take the record on his own with 22 losses.
