A delayed start to the first round of the MCB Tour Championship didn’t put a dampener on the day’s proceedings. The initial start time was moved a number of times, until officials opted for a redrawn two-tee start at midday.
A number of players had a quick start to the round, none more so then South Africa’s David Frost – looking to add a third MCB Tour Championship win to his cabinet – birdied his first three holes. Barry Lane, who came third in 2015, birdied three, four and five and signed for a five under par 67. Esteban Toledo – on his first visit to the Legend course – played the course in reverse and shot a six-under par front nine, and two over par back-nine for a respectable four under par 68. England’s Rodger Chapman joined Frost and Lane at five under par with a near stellar round including six birdies and one bogey.
The day however belonged to Phillip Price from Whales who took a liking to the changes at the Legend course. Teeing off on the par four 10th Price started with a birdie and added another four on the back nine. The front nine had only one blemish with bogey on the sixth, which was eclipsed by four birdies. Having signed for an eight under 64 Price finished the day with a three shot lead. In only his second start on the European Seniors Tour things are looking ominous for the rest of the field.
