Haydn Porteous shot an three-under-par 69 at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club in the opening round of the Nordea Masters on Thursday morning.
The 21-year-old had missed cuts at the Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship, but bounced back with a solid round that saw him join a tie for fifth.
He started on the 10th and rolled in three birdies over the first five holes out. He dropped his first shot of the day at the par-three 16th before making the turn in two-under 34.
He started the second loop with solid pars at the first and second holes before an eventful next three holes. The Joburg Open champion birdied the par-four third before dropping a shot at the fourth. He rebounded with a birdie at the fifth before rolling in four consecutive pars to post 69.
He was two shots off the pace of clubhouse leader Frenchman Clement Berardo, who shot a five-under-par 67. Three-time champion Lee Westwood also positioned himself well with a round of four-under-par 68. Defending champion Alexander Noren had yet to tee-off while home favourite Henrik Stenson opened with a sedate 72.
