Haydn Porteous birdied three holes in a row on the back nine of Archerfield Links to beat David Horsey in the second round of Paul Lawrie Match Play on Friday.
Porteous took a fortnight’s break after competing in The Open Championship, where he tied for 30th place after playing the weekend in four-under-par.
He returned to European Tour competition at Archerfield this week, where he beat John Parry on the 19th hole during the round of 64 on Thursday.
The 22-year-old began the round of 32 with an early 2up advantage, but Horsey fought and the pair turned all-square.
Horsey birdied the 11th to go 1up, but that would be the end of his reign.
Porteous birdied the 12th, 14th, 15th, and 16th for a decisive 3&2 win that set him into the final 16 players.
He’ll be armed with confidence going into his Saturday match against Scotland’s Marc Warren, who beat Magnus Carlsson 3&2.
The English were dominating during at the halfway mark of the tournament, with Matthew Fitzpatrick beating his countryman Matt Ford 6&5. Richard Bland drubbed Anthony Wall 6&4. James Morrison, Oliver Fisher, Daniel Brooks also made it through.
