South African golf legend Gary Player took to social media to express his sadness at the scores shot during the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday.
‘While delighted for all the players, it’s quite sad to see The Old Course of St. Andrews brought to her knees by today’s ball & equipment,’ tweeted Gary Player after Ross Fisher shot 61 to break the course record and Victor Dubuisson shot 63 after being -8 after 11 holes.
Many fans pointed to the lack of wind – usually St Andrews’ main defence in today’s modern game – but Player responded by saying: ‘perhaps … but why did it take over 200 years for the course record to be broken several times this week?’
As for the players themselves, Fisher said: ‘I’m gutted I missed that one on the last, but it’s just one of those days as I felt like I was playing alright, but I’m not going to complain too much with a 61.’
While Frenchman Victor Dubuisson labelled his round as ‘very special’.
‘It was very special because it was at the end of my season, and I played amazingly like the rest of the week, but today it feels like all the putts went in,’ he said.
