The incident, as well as his comments in the aftermath, caused some debate with the five-time Major champion roundly criticized for his actions.
The uproar continued with Mickelson releasing a belated apology and faced questions regarding the incident once again after his opening 70 at the Scottish Open.
‘But the thing about this is throughout my career, 25 years, there have been a lot of times where I have had to be accountable for decisions I did not make. And the reason why this has actually been easier: it was my own fault. The backlash is my own fault… I have had mental lapses… throughout my whole life. It’s not like it’s new. That was just one of the worst ones.’
The much-loved American caused a further scene at the start of the week by not engaging with any of the media.
Mickelson put his lack of media duty down to preparations for The Open and September’s Ryder Cup before taking his place in the field at Gullane this week.
