The weekend news focused on Dustin Johnson going to world number one, which overshadowed the shocking behaviour of a different golfer.
Pat Perez, famous for temper tantrums on the course, hit two fans with wayward tee shots on Sunday after failing to shout fore on either occasion.
The first time, it was a drive that drifted right on the 12th at Riviera Country Club, where Perez had clear sight of fans lining the hole. He signed a glove for the gentleman he injured, who was treated for a head wound.
Three holes later he had another errant tee shot and once again gave no warning. This time the ball hit a fan in the leg – he got a signed ball. Perez is 40 years old and should know better, but he walked off without reprimand.
Irish golfer Shane Lowry took to Twitter to express his disgust. ‘What’s it gonna take for players to start shouting fore,’ he wrote. ‘A signed ball or glove is no good to anyone if they are seriously injured???’
How much will Pat Perez be fined for his inability to think about spectator safety? Probably 3 signed gloves, by Jove. Toothless PGA Tour.
