Louis Oosthuizen will look to put his Friday round of 12-over-par 83 at The Open to bed with a good result at this week’s PGA Championship.
Compleat Golfer’s playing editor won the Perth International and came second at the WGC-Dell Match Play earlier this year, but has since missed four cuts in eight starts, the latest of which was at Royal Troon.
The 33-year-old shared 15th place at the Masters in April and tied for 21st at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in July. A good performance at Baltusrol Golf Club is exactly what Oosthuizen needs to forget his round of 83 on the Scottish coast last week.
His figures on the PGA Tour this season indicate that there is a problem with the flat stick and he ranks 166th in putting average. There is the anomaly that he ranks seventh on tour from ten feet away.
The Mossel Bay-born golfer regularly contends in the majors and has three runner-ups to go with his Open Championship victory in 2010. His record at the PGA Championship includes top-30 showings throughout the last four years, but it remains the only major where he lacks a top-three finish.
The nickname ‘King Louis’ came from his superlative performance at the ‘Home of Golf’ and he cannot be discounted at the majors. A top result in New Jersey this week would eliminate the memories of his struggles at Royal Troon.
