Louis Oosthuizen started the Maybank Championship Malaysia with a Thursday round of four-under-par 67 to share 16th place after round one.
The 2010 Open Champion started on the 10th hole at Royal Selangor Golf Club and got to scoring after hitting a beautiful approach into the par-three 12th. He boxed the four-foot putt for birdie there and made a further two gains ahead of the turn, offset by a birdie at the 16th that saw him turn in two-under.
He suffered a second and final bogey of the day at the second hole, but made amends with consecutive birdies at the third and fourth. A final bird at the eight would help him to reach the clubhouse on four-under, tied for 16th and three shots off the pace.
The Thursday lead was set by Australia’s Nathan Holman, who shot an impeccable 64 to make the clubhouse on seven-under, one shot ahead of a six-way tie for second place that included Danny Willett and Peter Uihlein.
‘I just played really well to be honest,’ said Holman. ‘Every part of my game was quite good and I was saying a few weeks ago that my game has been trending in that right direction so it was nice to get a really good one in.’
South African youngster Thriston Lawrence carded a respectable 68 to share 20th, while Keith Horne was tied for 48th on one-under.
