Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen feels there’s a lot of room for improvement as the 2020 SA Open, hosted by the City of Johannesburg, reaches the halfway mark, writes ANDRE HUISAMEN.
The 2010 British Open champion carded a round of 2-under par 69 and will head into moving day on Saturday three strokes behind the leader, Tapio Pulkkanen from Finland, who is at 11-under par.
Oosthuizen believes he could’ve done much better than what his scorecard suggests, especially on the greens where he struggled somewhat to convert the chances on offer.
‘It was a very frustrating round. I hit as good as I could probably have hit it but I just didn’t make any puts. I feel like I’m hitting decent puts but I just started doubting my lines and one or two probably could’ve fallen,’ said Oosthuizen, who played on the Firethorn course on Friday.
Like many other players, Oosthuizen felt the second round was a much tougher than the first, never mind on which course you played.
‘It was a bit more difficult than yesterday, but I’m really happy with the eagle on the 17th hole, other than that it was a day that required patience. The course was a bit wetter so the ball spun a bit more and the wind blew as well so everything combined made it difficult to play,’ said Oosthuizen.
Oosthuizen, though, feels confident that he can go big this weekend to be a good position to successfully defend his title come Sunday.
‘I played nicely yesterday so hopefully I can do it again this weekend. I try not to expect too much ahead of a round and I just hope for the best in the end.’
