Mark Murless fired a five-under-par 65 on the final day of the Big Easy – Huddle to claim a one-stroke victory over Jason Froneman.
Murless started the day in a share of fourth place, one shot behind overnight leaders Matthew Carvell, Pieter Kruger and Bryce McCabe, but a brilliant run of four birdies and an eagle in six holes proved the difference.
‘I didn’t get off to the best start, I made bogey on one and just towards the last few holes on that nine I made three birdies and an eagle. I got nice and hot and then the back nine – it wasn’t easy. It’s not an easy nine, especially with the two par-fives they’ve made par-fours for us. So to hold onto it was great,’ explained Murless.
Murless, who finished tie-second at the Big Easy – Royal Johannesburg & Kensington last week, was ecstatic with the one-stroke victory.
‘I’m really chuffed. I’ve been playing well, you know with the play-off last week at Royal Johannesburg, to carry that form into this week, I’m really happy with the result,’ said Murless.
For Froneman, a final round seven-under-par 63 was reason enough to celebrate and head into the remainder of the season with serious positivity.
‘Mark played really well. For him to hold the lead through nine and keep it going the whole back nine, he did really well. I wasn’t even expecting to get into a play-off, so I’m happy with my result,’ said Froneman.
Murless needed to up-and-down on the last hole from the greenside bunker to cement his triumph, and after putting his shot three-foot from the pin, he was visibly relieved, fist pumping to the crowd.
‘I’ve actually been struggling with my bunker play and I’ve been working hard at it. I was a little bit disappointed when I hit it in the bunker because I was slightly worried, but the practice paid off and I’m really happy about it,’ said Murless.
