Charl Schwartzel’s mixed back nine coupled with Jason Day finding his best will see the South African head into Sunday four back at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Schwartzel started the third round two behind but that gap widen to four after Day’s 67; his third sub 70 round of the week.
The 2011 Masters champion, who held off Day on that occasion, turned in one under par for the day after getting up and down on the par-five 7th with eight pars to consolidate his position on the leaderboard.
Schwartzel started his inward nine in good fashion after a superb bunker shot from over 60 feet left him inside six feet for birdie which he duly converted. A drive into the right rough on the 12th was compounded with a three-putt for his first bogey of the day which was followed immediately by his second at the par-three 13th after missing the green and failing to get up and down to save par.
He then found the fringe in two on the 580 yard par-five 15th to get his day back to even par but was one over once more after a wayward approach into the 16th.
Schwartzel birdied the last for a three-round score of -6 after leaving himself just eight feet from his 180-yard approach.
There are five players between Day in first and Schwartzel in tied seventh with 18 holes to play at Quail Hollow but the equation is far from solved as far as determining the winner.
