Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Irish Open from 2012 to 2015, but on Sunday he found the recipe for success at The K Club.
‘I’ve won on the world’s biggest stages, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt pressure like I did today. I was trying so hard because you only come home once every year to play in front of your home fans,’ he said.
The Northern Irishman was three shots ahead going into the final round and had to fend off the charge of Scotland’s Russell Knox. McIlroy played with aplomb over the closing holes and hit his approach at into the par-five 18th to five feet before converting for eagle.
The crowds roared as the world number three lifted his 13th European Tour title on 12-under-par with rounds of 67, 70, 70, 69.
‘To win your home open is very special. I’m really gonna savour this one and enjoy it. That finish today… I’ll remember that for the rest of my life,’ he said.
McIlroy donated his winnings to The Rory Foundation, which is the tournament’s charity benefactor.
‘Before today we had already raised over half a million euros and then with the prize money I’m donating we’ll break the million mark. It goes to so many kids that are in need,’ he said.
