Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen is more than satisfied with his opening-round 65 on day one of the 2020 SA Open at Randpark Golf Club, hosted by the City of Johannesburg, writes ANDRE HUISAMEN.
Oosthuizen was confident ahead of the start of play on Thursday that he could give it a real shot at becoming a back-to-back winner and after finishing the day on six under par, he is in a pretty decent position to make that dream a reality.
‘I played nicely, drove it nicely and in the end had quite a few putts that shaved the edges and didn’t get the line right, but I was rolling it nicely – so I would’ve taken six under for the first round,’ said Oosthuizen, who went bogey free for the round.
After quite a lot of overnight and early morning rain, Oosthuizen was impressed with how the course played.
The 37-year-old will play the Firethorn course at Randpark Golf Club tomorrow after his consistent start at the Bushwillow Course today. He is optimistic about another big score, despite some expected challenges.
‘The golf course [Firethorn] plays longer and you’ve got to hit your tee shots pretty decent but it is a good track. I still think if you play really good then you can score big as well.’
Oosthuizen, the player-host of the SA Open this year in the absence of Ernie Els, says he is not going to change a lot in his approach ahead of tomorrow’s round at the Firethorn course and believes his current motion is working well.
‘I’m just doing the things that I’ve been doing the last two to three months and what I’ve really been working on, trying to get better at everything.’
