South Africa’s Zander Lombard bogeyed the final hole of his third round to drop into a nine-man playoff which he would survive at the World Super 6 in Perth.
Lombard’s third round 73 was significantly better than overnight leaders Brett Rumford and Lee Westwood.
The defending champion and the English veteran crashed out following 78s on Saturday.
Lombard failed to take advantage of the leaders’ struggles, going out in 38 – which included a double at the 2nd and bogeys on both of the par fives.
He steadied the ship, playing the first five holes around the turn in -3. Once again, he surrendered his position with two more bogeys forcing him into the playoff.
A par on the 1st playoff hole did the trick, but his late slip leaves him with plenty to do on Sunday if he wants to get the job done.
Thailand’s Prom Meesewat finished on top and will have a bye into the last 16 after finishing at 12 under, two shots clear of Dane Thorbjørn Olesen, American Sean Crocker and Australian Lucas Herbert.
Englishman Sam Horsfield, Japan’s Yisaku Miyazato, and Australians Brad Kennedy and Dimitrios Papadatos secured the other four first-round byes after finishing at eight under.
The leader’s countryman Kiradech Aphibarnrat eventually prevailed at the 5th playoff hole to advance into Sunday’s six-hole matchplay series.
