Lejan Lewthwaite claimed the 2020 SuperSport Ladies Challenge title after beating Tandi McCallum in a playoff on Thursday at the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City.
It was a dramatic finish to proceedings as Lewthwaite fully capitalised on the opportunity after Tandi McCallum surrendered her three-shot lead to finish on seven under par alongside Lewthwaite.
McCallum made four birdies on the front nine and by the time she turned for home, it looked for all money that she would walk away victorious.
Her closest challenger was Nobuhle Dlamini on seven under with Lewthwaite a stroke back. The former – the 2018 champion – fell from contention with a triple-bogey 7 on the 17th to finish with a 76.
McCallum’s four drop shots on the back nine meant she and Lewthwaite, who fought hard throughout the finale round with a 73, had to return to the famous 18th hole for a playoff.
She kept her composure in the heat of battle to prevail over McCallum, who paid the price for two late drops on Thursday.
The win comes as a welcome boost for Lewthwaite, who shared the lead after both the first and second rounds and ultimately deserved to be crowned champion.
