Russell Knox will be hoping for a career-defining victory this week at Wentworth Club in the BMW PGA Championship. The world number 23 is a tournament favourite after he shot a Sunday 68 at the K Club to share second place at the Irish Open.
The Scotsman plays most of his events on the PGA Tour. This season he’s made 11 cuts in 15 starts, was runner up at the OHL Classic and the RBC Heritage, and won the WGC-HSBC Champions. The 30-year-old is on the cusp of making the world’s top 20 and a good week in England will get him there.
The Jacksonville University alumni has changed his schedule to include a few European Tour starts and aims to make the Ryder Cup. The Florida resident hasn’t enjoyed success across the pond, but his tie for second in Ireland last week could have been a turning point.
Knox is ranked third in golfers who could represent Great Britain at the Olympics and needs to be in the top two in order to go to Rio. He has been gifted a light field at Wentworth this week, devoid of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia. Justin Rose, who is up against Knox for an Olympic spot, will miss the European flagship event due to a back injury. It is unclear when Rose will return.
