Charl Schwartzel, Dylan Frittelli and Trevor Immelman will all head home after failing to make the cut at the 2018 Masters tournament.
READ: Louis steady, Spieth hangs on and McIlroy’s dream alive
Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace were left to fly the South African flag on the weekend after three countrymen were sent home on Friday. Oosthuizen is six shots behind leader Patrick Reed after a second consecutive 71.
Grace is two over at the halfway mark after a second 73. The one-time PGA Tour winner turned in -1 for his day but dropped three shots on the bounce from the 10th.
He fought back steadily with birdies at both of the back nine’s par fives but dropped a shot at the last, in a repeat of Thursday’s round, for a 73 which leaves him in T28 and with a mountain to climb on Saturday if he wants to challenge for the Green Jacket.
Missing the weekend:
Schwartzel +6
Schwartzel’s absence from the weekend was most surprising as he fired an unexpected 78 and missed the cut by one after doubling the 17th and dropping another shot on the last.
The 2011 champion was three over after five but two over through 10.
Enter Rae’s Creek. The infamous 12th hole cost him two shots when his tee shot found the water as he crucially lost momentum and failed to birdie either of the back nine par fives before limping into the clubhouse with three shots dropped in his final two holes of the championship.
Frittelli +7
The debutant needed something special to make the cut after his opening 77 and got off to the perfect start with a birdie at the 1st. He made the turn level after his birdie at the 8th got back one of the two shots dropped earlier (two and four). A bogey at the 10th saw him drop over the cut line and his dropped shot on the 13th saw him needing to force the tempo which he failed to do, rather playing his final five holes level with no birdies or bogeys in that stretch.
Immelman +9
The 2008 champion plays on his exemption as a past winner and entered the week with no form to speak of. He heads home after a second round 75.
