Jared Harvey shot a three-under-par in the second round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Zimbali Country Club on Friday to total 11-under for the week and take a massive seven-shot lead into the final round.
He started his round with a healthy five-shot lead over second-placed Jake Roos, Lindani Ndwandwe and Keenan Davidse and continued from where he left off the previous round. Starting on the 10th, Harvey made three birdies on the opening stretch.
With the wind rapidly picking up speed on Friday afternoon, it was always going to be a challenging round for all players, but Harvey seemed ready for the challenge.
‘I started on 10 today,’ he said. ‘I knew it was going to be tricky playing 10 and 11; straight into the teeth of that wind, and it didn’t disappoint. It was probably the toughest condition I’ve played in in a long time.’
His back nine also proved to be tricky as he made his first bogey in 31 holes for the week on the fourth hole, his 13th. He then made an eagle on the sixth hole, his 15th, but he dropped another shot on his final hole and had to settle for three-under.
‘I thought the into-the-wind holes were going to be extremely tough,’ he admitted. ‘But I found the down-wind holes just as difficult. Those front pins, it was almost impossible to get near the pin.’
On a mission to get a maiden win on the Sunshine Tour, Harvey said that even with the huge gap he has opened up between himself and the second-placed Louis de Jager, he is not one to sit back and defend the score he’s already posted.
‘I will try and use the same game plan I had. I will suss out each hole on its merit. I don’t like to back off because I think when I do that I tend to make a few more mistakes than I usually do, so more of the same would be nice,’ Harvey said.
De Jager, in second place, played some of the best golf of the day as he made two eagles and two birdies en route to his four-under-par 68 finish. He could have produced an even better round, but his progress was frustrated by the two shots he dropped on the fifth and eighth – his 14th and 17th.
‘I’m really happy with my score,’ De Jager said after his round. ‘It was a bit tougher today because most of the par-fours are into the wind. I think the key was taking advantage of the good conditions in the morning and the two eagles definitely helped me, you know.’
Keenan Davidse takes up the third spot on three-under for the week, while Sweden’s Jonathan Agren, Andre Nel and Lindani Ndwandwe share fourth spot on two-under par. Jean Paul Strydom is one-under par and takes up the seventh spot, with Greg Bentley, Oliver Bekker, Jake Roos and Christiaan Basson all level par.
