This week, the European Tour returns to the ‘Home of Golf’ as the 16th edition of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship gets underway.
Celebrating links golf at its finest, the tournament is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses – the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Branden Grace will have fond memories of the prestigious event as he claimed the title back in 2012, and the current world number 14 is the only South African to lift the trophy.
It was in 2012 when Grace lit up the European Tour golfing scene, cementing his name among golfs elite thanks to four victories on the European Tour in just 10 months.
Louis Oosthuizen is another who will cherish setting foot on the Old Course. Oosthuizen won the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 2010 by a remarkable seven-stroke margin from Lee Westwood.
Oosthuizen’s last non-major or World Golf Championship European Tour start came at the ISPS Handa Perth International Open where he secured a one-stroke victory over Alexander Levy of France.
20 other South Africans form part of the field in Scotland, among those is recent Sunshine Tour winner Jacques Blaauw, 2008 Masters winner Trevor Immelman, as well as young talents such as Brandon Stone, Haydn Porteous and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
