Graeme McDowell will miss Tuesday’s Open Championship qualifier after Air France failed to ensure the safe arrival of his precious cargo on Monday.
McDowell has opted to skip the qualifier at St Annes and instead will focus on grabbing one of the six spots – for players finishing in the top 10 and not yet exempt – on offer over the course of the next two weeks at the Irish Open and Scottish Open.
‘I cannot give 100% without my own equipment which has been mishandled by Air France,’ said McDowell on Twitter.
‘Lots of you wanting to know why I don’t grab a set off the rack and give it my best shot to get in the Open.
‘Of course I could do this but wouldn’t be firing on all cylinders and there are six spots up for grabs over the next two weeks.’
The 2010 US Open champion finished in a share of 37th place at the French Open and travelled via England’s Manchester airport where his clubs did not turn up.
