Thomas Bjorn can count on his talisman Sergio Garcia to be firing on all cylinders at the Ryder Cup later this month after the Dane handed the 2017 Masters champion a captain’s pick.
Garcia’s form since breaking his curse at Augusta last April has been woeful but the European leader has opted for experience over youth, especially with as many as five rookies playing their way on to his team, for the showdown at Le Golf National.
The 38-year-old Spaniard did not make a Major cut in 2018 and has just one top 10 since April although that did come at the venue for Europe’s quest to regain the trophy they surrendered in 2016 at Hazeltine.
‘It is very exciting for me to be part of another Ryder Cup team, and I’m going to give everything I have,’ said Garcia.
‘I’m very thankful to Thomas for believing in me and, you know, I know that it probably wasn’t an easy decision.
‘It’s been a tough year obviously … I’ve been working hard. I feel like my game is coming along.’
‘Everybody knows how much I love the Ryder Cup and everybody knows how much I love team sports and we’ve always really enjoyed football and all those kind of things.’
Garcia has been part of five Ryder Cup-winning teams in nine appearances since his debut in 1999.
