There was both joy and sadness for Dylan Frittelli after his breakthrough win at the Lyoness Open at the Diamond Country Club, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

Frittelli held his nerve down the stretch before finally sealing his maiden with a sweetly-struck 7-iron to the heart of the green on the par 3 18th. Two putts followed to erase the early-season memories of his playoff defeat at the Volvo China Open.

‘I held on in the end after playing pretty solid all day,’ Frittelli told Compleat Golfer.

‘I got off to a fast start and could’ve made a few more birdies on the back nine, but obviously it was a little intense with trying to get that first win. I am proud with my finish though, the birdie on 16 was good and the par save on 17 was huge and I’m just glad to finally get the win.’

Frittelli has the week off, but is already looking forward to bigger things after notching up win number one – a win worth over R2.4-million.

‘Hopefully this means big things for my career, get me in the Open Championship, move up in the Race to Dubai and open up some more doors further down the road,’ said the 27-year-old.

Frittelli’s entry into the winner’s circle came on a day of great sadness for one of the members of his team.

‘My regular caddie John Curtis’ wife passed away early this morning, so he is very much in my thoughts right now. He’s a great guy, one of the really good guys and my thoughts are with him and his family.’
