South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli is eager for more starts on the PGA Tour after a solid showing at the Honda Classic on Sunday, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
Frittelli took full advantage of his opportunity at the PGA National finishing in solo 11th after a final round 69 – a performance that will add some much needed OWGR points with the cut-off ahead of The Masters imminent. The result also added almost R2-million to his bank balance.
‘I was nice and consistent out there and (I) kept up my good form with a solid result,’ Frittelli told Compleat Golfer.
The 27-year-old was fifth in strokes gained off the tee and crucially kept doubles or worse off his card all week in testing conditions. His consistency in his mind was backed up statically too as he ranked T4 in birdies made and T12 in putting in a field that included some of the very best in the world.
‘I was really happy with my performance this week you know, going on to the biggest stage, bigger tournament with the biggest players.
‘It was a fun week, yeah sure I made a few mistakes here and there but that’s part of the game. There was some good golf and it was a good experience.’
Frittelli’s rookie season on the European Tour brought about two wins with some near-misses in the Race To Dubai season-ending events, his first few starts in Majors and his progress continues at a rapid rate showing no signs of slowing down with the WGC-Mexico next this week.
‘Yeah, as good as Honda was, I have to shelve it now and get ready for a big week in Mexico City. It’s a top event with a lot on the line, so I just want to settle into my routine now and put in another good performance.’
The former University of Texas golf star admits that he’s keen to make the PGA Tour his home.
‘I’m living in Austin most of the time now, so it makes sense for me from that point of view. I’d love to get more opportunities to play in the States and challenge myself against the best players in the world.’
That challenge, regardless of his tour status, starts on Thursday where Dustin Johnson defends his title.
