Trevor Fisher Jnr got off to a flying start at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on Thursday and shot 67 to share second place amongst the morning field.
‘I played solid today and it felt like putted well. The course is in amazing condition, so if you’ve got the flat stick rolling nicely then you can get a score going,’ he said.
The 2015 Africa Open champion is now in his second year on the European Tour and has settled in nicely with three top-20s in January. While he claims to be lacking some lustre, the results are certainly not for the 36-year-old.
He began the year with a lucrative run on home soil, finishing tied-eighth at the BMW South African Open Championship and tied-13th at the Joburg Open. He then left home soil to compete at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he stood his ground against the world’s best and shared 16th place on eight under par.
‘My game has been okay, nothing special,’ he understated. ‘Since Abu Dhabi it’s been a fight, but I found a bit of form today. I’m trying to slow it up a bit, because I get a bit tense out here and a bit too quick sometimes.’
On Thursday he kept the good form coming with a round of five-under-par 67 that secured him an early clubhouse share of second place, one shot behind leader Alex Noren. The tournament has only just begun, but Fisher has given himself another chance to contend in Europe and has momentum on his side.
