But the incredible ball striking of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson earned the Europeans a 3&2 win over Jordan Spieth, which helped settle the nerves for captain Darren Clarke.
Shortly after that gentle giant Thomas Pieters produced a 3&2 victory over JB Holmes, with the Belgian coming back from 2down at the start of the match.
Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello was never down in his match against Jimmy Walker and snagged another point for the visitors with his 3&2 triumph.
Team Europe still had plenty of work to do in order to retain the cup, but their early starters helped to get the ball rolling.
