Four-time major champ Ernie Els will tee up at the Porsche European Open this week looking to secure his 29th European Tour victory.
The Big Easy mad the cut 12 times in 21 starts on the PGA Tour before travelling across the pond for this week’s € 2-million tournament, held at Bad Griesbach in Germany.
Els’ last regular European Tour event was the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February, where he shared 18th place after shooting 67 in the final round.
The South African last played the European Open in 1994, the same year he won his first US Open, and has enjoyed a legendary career in the interim.
This week he returns to Germany as World Golf Hall of Famer, former world number one, and multiple major winner.
His swing is smooth as ever, but it will take some impressive play for Els to match the Europeans looking to find form ahead of there Ryder Cup next week. Both Martin Kaymer and Thomas Pieters will play at Bad Griesbach before their trip to Hazeltine.
Defending champ Thonngchai Jaidee is in the field, along with Padraig Harrington, Victor Dubuisson, Matteo Manassero, and Brett Rumford.
South Africans in the field include Haydn Porteous, Brandon Stone, George Coetzee, Trevor Fisher, Jaco van Zyl, Zander Lombard, and Richard Sterne.
Els, who last won on the European Tour at the 2013 BMW International Open, has all the pedigree to get win number 29 under the belt. It should be a fun week in Germany.
