Bryson DeChambeau finally got it right on his third try at the 18th hole and won the Memorial Tournament in a playoff on Sunday, while Louis Oosthuizen signed off on a positive note.
DeChambeau three-putted for bogey on the 18th for a 1-under 71 to get into a three-way playoff at Muirfield Village. He missed the green from the fairway on the 18th on the first extra hole and had to scramble for par. On his third try, he hit his approach to 12 feet behind the hole and made it for birdie to beat Byeong Hun An and win for the second time on the PGA TOUR.
‘I can’t believe I did it,’ said DeChambeau, who moved to fourth on the FedExCup standings.
Kyle Stanley ran off four straight birdies toward the end of his round until his final tee shot caromed off a tree and across the fairway into deep rough. He made bogey for a 70 and still got into a playoff, but he was eliminated on the first extra hole when his approach from deep rough put the ball well above his feet and it squirted to the right, leading to a bogey. And closed with a 69.
Oosthuizen stormed home to finish at -10 thanks to a closing 65. The final day push saw Oosthuizen end T13; a climb of 39 places. The same cannot be said for Rory Sabbatini (72) and Branden Grace (75), who ended T44 and T52 respectively.
Oosthuizen hit 12 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation to set up the low round of the day.
Starting on the 10th, he tapped a one footer in on the par-five 11th to get going before slipping up at the next with a three-putt bogey. That mistake was erased on the 15th as he moved back into red figures before his second tap-in of the day, this time at the 201-yard par-three 16th, got him going.
A 12 footer at the 17th saw Oosthuizen make the turn in -3 as he accelerated into the clubhouse with further gains at the 2nd, 6th, 7th before another accurate tee shot on the 185-yard par-three 8th saw him claim another birdie with his fifth putt inside a foot.
