Retief Goosen continued his fine play at the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Sunday, but the same cannot be written about colleague Charl Schwartzel.
Goosen carded a final round four-under-par 66 to finish T6 after moving up 23 places on the leaderboard at TPC Southwind. The veteran South African was bogey-free on Sunday as he built on the progress of his 68 in round three and might look back at his run of eight pars to close and wonder what might’ve been had he taken advantage of good chances at the 11th and 14th holes.
Also left wondering was Schwartzel, who plummeted down the leaderboard on Saturday after a 78, who slumped into the clubhouse with a 75. It was another poor day with the driver as the 2011 Masters champion hit just six of 14 fairways to go with 11 of 18 greens hit in regulation.
Schwartzel was one over as he made the turn and dropped another at the 13th before finding the water on the 15th and two-putting for double-bogey to finish bottom of the pile of those making the weekend.
He will need a quick turnaround as he heads to New York for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where Goosen won in 2004 – the last time the year’s second Major was hosted there.
