George Coetzee closed with a final round 67 to end as the leading South African at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at Education City Golf Course in Doha on Sunday.
Coetzee rose 14 places on Sunday thanks to a particularly fast start. He birdied two of the three opening holes before adding birdie nunber 3 for the round at the seventh, this after an eagle three at the previous hole.
Coetzee, though, slowed towards the clubhouse with bogeys at nine and 11. A penultimate birdie was the lone highlight on the back nine as he sneaked into the top 10 to bolster his Race to Dubai ranking. He is projected to wake up on Monday in 42nd place.
Four shots back in bunch sharing 28th place were Zander Lombard, Darren Fichardt, Wilco Nienaber and Justin Harding.
Brandon Stone ended in 44th.
At the top of the pile, Spain’s Jorge Campillo banked the win after seeing off Scotland’s David Drysdale in a titanic playoff. The pair traded birdies on the 18th hole in their first two goes in extra time before Campillio birdied it again on the fifth time around.
Drysdale was unable to match the Spaniard, who was left relieved after a double bogey on the 17th saw his chances of victory jeopardised.
