Following the news that the biennial match between the United States and Europe was postponed to 2021, Team Europe skipper Padraig Harrington has come out in support of the move.
Facing the prospect of playing without fans, organisers opted to shift the showpiece event set for Whistling Straits in Wisconsin back a year to 24-26 September 2021. Rome will now host the 2023 event.
‘Rescheduling the Ryder Cup was never going to be an easy decision given the many factors to take into consideration, but I believe it is the right assessment given the unprecedented circumstances we are facing at this time,’ said Harrington.
‘I know, right now, that September 2021 feels like a long time away but it will come around quickly and I guarantee that the European players and I will be ready when it does.’
Europe are the defending champions after their commanding performance at Le Golf National in Paris.
