Former Springbok Schalk Burger Snr is just two off the pace heading into the final round of the team event at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
After rounds of 65 and 60, Burger Snr and partner Jaco Ahlers produced another solid round of 65 to put themselves firmly in contention behind the leaders on -28, Aidan Heavey and French professional Gregory Bourdy.
Burger was left to rue a four-putt on the 17th hole, which took some gloss off another fine round that saw them hit the front after 14 holes before a slow finish.
Joining Team Ahlers/Burger is the combination of Australian cricketer Shane Warne and Kiwi pro Ryan Fox. The Australasian duo began the event with a stunning 61 and got themselves back into the mix with a 64 to follow up their second round 65.
Another famous cricket player, Jacques Kallis, also made the grade for Sunday’s team event. Kallis and Christiaan Bezuidenhout soared into the top 20 after a second consecutive 63.
The Proteas icon was pleased to make the cut, and is looking forward to another low score as he eyes a surprise win from behind.
‘Super happy to make the cut @dunhilllinks with my partner @BezChristiaan on 23-under. Big day tomorrow 5 behind leaders,’ tweeted Kallis.
Four-time Major winner Ernie Els and partner Rurik Gobel, in-form Sunshine Tour pro Oliver Bekker and Gary Hackner, former Ireland rugby player Paul O’Connell and Brandon Stone, and Selwyn Nathan and English professional Lee Slattery all missed the cut by just one shot. Missing the final round by two was Johann Rupert and multiple European Tour winner Branden Grace.
