• Burger Snr in contention at Dunhill Links

    Schalk Burger Snr
All smiles after a successful day on the links

Schalk Burger Snr and Jaco Ahlers are just two shots off the pace after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

The former Springbok, who celebrated his birthday during his second round, and partner Ahlers find themselves just two off the pace at the halfway mark. Second best from a South African perspective for a second consecutive day were Ernie Els and partner Rurik Gobel. The Big Easy team are five shots off the pace and in line for the final round in 13th place – the top 20 sides will compete in the final round on Sunday.

Just outside the top 20 is the Branden Grace/Johann Rupert combination, who shot 64 on Friday; one better than their opening round score. Next best is Irish rugby legend Paul O’Connell and SA Olympic golfer Brandon Stone. Stone’s side are in 27th place after a second consecutive 65.

Joining the Stone side in T27 is Jacques Kallis and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who stormed up the leaderboard after a second round 63 to move them into contention in Scotland.

At 11 under – ten shots behind the leaders – are Dylan Frittelli and Kelly Slater, as well as Mark Boucher and Laurie Canter. A shot behind that tally is the McIlroy father-and-son combination.

First round co-leader Rob Louw and Thomas Detry had a day to forget as they plummeted to T76 after a 73.

At -7 is the combination of young South African star golfer Haydn Porteous and Springbok great Fourie Du Preez.

Fourth from bottom is former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who followed up Thursday’s 71 with another 71 on Friday with partner Callum Shinkwin.
